David Heywood got his B.M. in performance at North Texas State University, where he studied improvisation with Dan Haerle and Rich Matteson, and he got his M.M. in performance at the University of South Carolina under Bert Ligon. He has been on the jazz faculty at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC since 1999, where he also directs the wind ensemble. As an arranger, he has done dozens of big band and mixed jazz ensemble arrangements for the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, The Charlton Singleton Little Big Band, the U.S. Air Force, and other professional groups in Charleston and Las Vegas. As a performer, he leads the Charleston Latin Jazz Collective, and plays regular local jazz gigs on flute and piano.  In addition, he was named winner of the the 2015 Jazz Flute Masterclass competition sponsored by the National Flute Association.
