PAST CONCERTS IN 2021-22 SEASON
MASTERWORKS OF VOICE AND DRAMA • Thursday, Feb. 3
Faculty member and acclaimed lyric soprano Saundra DeAthos-Meers will be joined on stage by international opera tenor Harold Meers; special guest Morris Robinson, who is a Metropolitan Opera star and current Grammy nominee (Best Choral Performance: Mahler: Symphony No. 8, 'Symphony Of A Thousand'); and pianist Andrea Molina. “Masterworks of Voice and Drama,” will feature Strauss's "Four Last Songs" as well as the rarely performed Vaughan-Williams love duet (opera) titled “Hugh, the Drover,” in addition to works by Quilter, Schubert, Gounod and Verdi.
The dynamic Meers voice duo founded Charleston Opera Theater, which aims to immerse the local community in musical and theatrical operatic experience. In the same vein, Saundra DeAthos-Meers, Director of the College of Charleston Opera, folds in exposure of her students – and all students – to high-achieving artists and professional concerts of vocal works, which in turn enhances their academic experience. “Masterworks of Voice and Opera” does just that while also sharing with the community professional vocal artistry, especially with featured guest artist, two-time Grammy nominated Morris Robinson on the program.
Fresh off his recent performance in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of “The Magic Flute,” Robinson, an alumnus of The Citadel, is excited to return to Charleston for the concert alongside the Meers duo. In addition, Robinson will work directly with the College’s voice students in a masterclass as the students prepare for their next major production, “The Magic Flute,” — a collaboration between the College’s Department of Music and Department of Theatre and Dance, as well as the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, on Feb. 25 and 27 at the Sottile Theatre. Robinson’s student interaction is timely as he recently finished singing for a new adaptation of “The Magic Flute” for cinema, set to be released at the end of 2022 in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland by Tobis Film.

Thank you, Marian, Thank you, Paul: A Tribute to Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson • Monday, Nov. 1
-
Duo Alexis Davis-Hazell and Earl Hazell present a performance honoring contralto Marian Anderson (1897-1993) and bass-baritone/actor/activist Paul Robeson (1898-1976) — two key African American trailblazers in opera and other musical art forms. Having overcome countless barriers in the face of adversity, their talents, tenacity, and powerful voices on and off the stage paved the way for generations of great artists. The College’s performance features two of those great artists mezzo-soprano Alexis Davis-Hazell and basso contante Earl Hazell, who will bring history alive through African American Spirituals, American art songs and arias as shared by Anderson and Robeson during their careers. Attendees may recognize music by Copland, Verdi, Kern & Hammerstein, and Flaherty & Ahrens. The Hazell duo’s concerts carry educational components, such as the contributions of African Americans in jazz, opera, poetry, American art songs, Spirituals and other art forms that are part of the cultural make-up of modern American society.
