Cello
The cello studio is led by Associate Professor Natalia Khoma, an internationally renowned cellist.
Khoma has won top prizes at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, Budapest Pablo Casals International Competition, Markneukirchen Competition in Germany, as well as First prize at the Belgrade International Cello Competition. Natalia Khoma is an Honorary Professor of Lviv and Odesa State Music Academies in Ukraine. She was featured on a Grammy nominated CD for the Dorian Sono Luminus label. Website: www.NataliaKhoma.com
Studies
We offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music (performance) and the Artist Certificate.
Students taking performance classes receive instruction tailored to their individual needs based on their aims and performance level. Each student is encouraged to attain the highest artistic and intellectual standard to which he/she aspires. Courses of study are available for both majors and non-majors, with a concentration in Cello performance available to music majors or double majors.
Performance Opportunities
Students are afforded numerous performance opportunities within the College program and in the Charleston community at large including Piccolo Spoleto Festival.
In addition to applied cello lessons and weekly repertory classes, they take part in orchestra directed by Yuriy Bekker, concertmaster of Charleston Symphony Orchestra and in chamber groups under the direction of internationally renowned pianist Volodymyr Vynnysky, with direct participation of other distinguished performance faculty at the College.
Guest Artists
Prof. Khoma has been instrumental in developing and organizing Charleston Music Fest, and shaping it into present form and place of importance in today’s music world. CMF is a year-round series of chamber music performances adding to the colorful cultural life of Charleston. Its goal is to present the finest classical and contemporary chamber music by world-class artists to Charleston audiences; to develop new and younger audiences for chamber music; and to provide educational activities which encourage, broaden and deepen appreciation of the chamber music art form.
Each year the festival draws to Charleston world-renowned musicians, many of them international stars, as well as distinguished professors. Thus our students are not only exposed to exceptional music, but also provided with the opportunity to study with today’s masters during the free master classes offered.
Some of our students receive academic honors and awards, become finalists and winners in regional, national and international competitions, and go on to top graduate schools. Some of them attain distinguished careers in the US and internationally.
